Northern territory state emblem. Northern Territory Floral Emblem The Sturts Desert Rose was discovered by Charles Sturt in 1844-45 and was given its botanical name in 1947 by James Hamlyn Willis. The actual plant only has five petals the extra two in the flag are purely symbolic. It is also known as the Darling River Rose Cotton Rosebush and Australian Cotton.
Malvaceae Floral Emblem of the Northern Territory. On 12 July 1961 Sturts Desert Rose was proclaimed floral emblem of the Northern Territory by the Commonwealth Government which was then responsible for the administration of the Territory. Proclamation was made using the name Cienfugosia gossypioides which is now replaced by the name Gossypium sturtianum.
